Cancer Knowledge at Patients’ Fingertips

For more than 15 years, we have helped build the American Society of Clinical Oncology into the leading voice for clinical cancer research and improved patient care.  Through thought leadership position papers, digital tools, research promotion, rapid response tactics, and outreach to key U.S. media, we have helped ASCO support physicians and patients and influence critical oncology policy debates.

Objective

Recognizing the increasing need and demand for trusted, at-your-fingertips information for cancer patients, we worked with ASCO to develop Cancer.Net Mobile, an app for iOS and Android, based on information from ASCO’s award-winning oncologist-approved patient website.

Approach

We knew that simply replicating the website experience in mobile form wouldn’t be enough to meet patients’ needs and increase engagement. Instead, we capitalized on the strengths of the mobile platform, creating an array of practical tools to help people with cancer navigate their care. Informed by ASCO’s physician volunteers, these features include symptom and prescription trackers, questions to ask the medical team, voice recording for doctor visits, and a continually updated feed of educational videos and podcasts. The app also includes up-to-date information on more than 120 types of cancer, and can be viewed in both English and Spanish.

Outcome

To date, Cancer.Net Mobile has been downloaded more than 60,000 times and maintains a four-star user rating. It has won multiple industry awards, including the Mobile Web Award for Best Health Care Mobile Application, a Web Health Award, an eHealthcare Leadership Platinum Award and a W3 Award.
